Follow the Data Podcast: “World War C” – Us Against the Microbe

Map of COVID-19 Global Cases from the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center, March 26, 2020

Featuring Dr. Kelly Henning and Dr. Tom Frieden

The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we live, the way we work, and the way we view the world. The virus has rapidly spread through communities worldwide, with devastating impact on people’s health, our economy, and our society. However, there are things we can do today to help slow or prevent the virus from spreading. And it starts with listening to our public health experts.

As Mayor of New York City, Mike Bloomberg led the city through a number of public health crises, including the H1N1 outbreak and the West Nile virus. Mike knows that trusting in and giving public health professionals the tools to protect the public is vital to saving lives and to helping mitigate the kind of social and economic data that could make this crisis even more debilitating.

Building on Mike’s experience, we recently launched several initiatives to accelerate the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. And through our podcast Follow the Data, we will be bringing you episodes highlighting each of these initiatives over the coming weeks with interviews featuring experts in public health, nonprofits, and local government.

In this episode, Dr. Kelly Henning – who leads our Public Health program at Bloomberg Philanthropies and former Director of Epidemiology for the City of New York – speaks to Dr. Tom Frieden, the President and CEO of Resolve to Save Lives, an initiative of Vital Strategies, and the former director of the CDC.

They discuss the global response to COVID-19, how our $40 million Coronavirus Global Response Initiative will help prevent or slow the spread of the virus in low- and middle-income countries, why focusing on these particular countries is critical to stopping the spread of the virus, and how we can keep our cities running and safe.
